A Season-by-Season Garden Care Calendar

A Season-by-Season Garden Care Calendar

A practical calendar showing when to prune, fertilise, water and check for pests.

A garden improves over the years when the right job is done at the right time. Here is a seasonal care calendar prepared for the Marmara and Aegean climate.

Spring (March–May)

  • Prune branches damaged in winter; shape spring-flowering shrubs after they bloom.
  • Give the lawn its first feed in late March together with aeration.
  • Switch on the irrigation system and check drippers and sprinklers.
  • Begin pest checks on roses and fruit trees.

Summer (June–August)

  • Mow lawn at 4–5 cm; cutting short weakens grass in drought.
  • Water early morning or late evening; deep, infrequent watering encourages root growth.
  • Deadhead flowers and lightly prune lavender and rosemary after flowering.
  • Keep mulch at 5 cm.

Autumn (September–November)

  • The best planting season: plant trees, shrubs and bulbs now.
  • Give the lawn its last feed and overseed.
  • Clear leaves from the lawn; make compost.
  • Prepare winter protection for tender plants.

Winter (December–February)

  • Prune deciduous trees in late winter (once frost risk has passed).
  • Drain the irrigation system and insulate exposed lines.
  • Shake snow load off evergreen branches that could be damaged.
  • Service garden tools.

Professional care

For complex gardens and tree pruning, get expert help. Our care packages for a 500 m² garden are ₺9,500–16,000 per month, with a 10% discount on annual contracts. Our agronomist plans pest and disease checks.

Common mistakes

Mowing the lawn too short, watering late in the evening so leaves stay wet (fungus risk) and pruning trees at the wrong time are the most common mistakes. Cherry and peach trees should be pruned in late summer, while most ornamental trees are pruned in late winter.

Pest and disease checks

Look for aphids in May–June, spider mites in July–August and box moth on boxwood. Prefer biological methods (ladybirds, soapy water, neem oil) before chemical sprays.

Monthly checklist

Each month check irrigation points, mulch depth, stakes and ties, and diseased branches; early action sharply lowers cost.

Fertiliser calendar

Feed the lawn three times a year (late March, June and September) and shrubs and perennials once in spring with a slow-release fertiliser. Over-fertilising causes leaf scorch and pest outbreaks; follow the dose on the product label.
